Kids have recess. Kids have summer break, winter break, and spring break. They play five sports, run around with friends, play in the dirt, build LEGOs, laugh, cry, and follow their interests on a whim. They can be entertained by unstructured “play” for hours.

Adult Recess

As adults, we forget to partake as our “responsibilities” mount. In fact, they seem to swell with age. We have obvious obligations that we must take care of (like finding and maintaining a job), but we also have things we purposely add to our plate, like children (if you wish) and aspirations to create a legacy or impact. We acknowledge these things take an incredible amount of time and energy; however, we forget to simply have fun, just for the sake of having fun.

We forget to take breaks. We forget to chase fireflies at night and are worried about the stains on our shoes. We forget to do things for joy rather than a predetermined outcome. We are devoid of “play.” Time to implement adult recess mode.
No rules. No expectations. No judgement. Just good, (maybe clean) fun.

The funny thing is, we learn a lot by having fun. We learn a lot about ourselves through play. When we shed ourselves of the trappings of email and to-do lists, get outside, and explore, we find ourselves enamored by life (again). This could be as simple as shooting a basketball at a park or picking up a crayon at dinner with the kids to refinding a long lost love for music, art, the outdoors, sports, languages, or even the pursuit of making new friends.

Try Something New & Fun

Try something new, and be willing to be a beginner. Have fun not being good at something but doing it anyway because it feels good. Say yes to something silly. Don’t be afraid of triviality; sometimes spontaneity opens a door you never thought to look behind.

Live Better Retreat

We’re playing on the beach and in the ocean (surfing!) all week this week on our Live Better Retreat. Surfing (or attempting to, at least) in the company of friends, in the sun, in the ocean, is as playful as it gets.
